Fighting Poverty in America

Americans Helping Americans Mission: Reducing Appalachian Poverty

For nearly four decades, the overarching goal of Americans Helping Americans (AHA) has been fighting poverty in America – particularly in Appalachia where poverty levels remain some of the highest in the nation.

With programs that address the needs of children, families, teachers, and the elderly, we are dedicated to making positive and long-lasting impacts that uplift and transform our communities.

Hope in Action: How AHA Is Making a Difference in Appalachia

Historically, Appalachia has been one of the poorest regions of America. With the help of our partners, we’re changing that.

Here are just a few of our charitable programs:

Basic Needs:
Americans Helping Americans provides coats, shoes, blankets, and food boxes for Appalachian families (2,904 youth and adult coats distributed in 2023). We also provide local grants that assist with residents’ utility bills.

Housing:
AHA grants provide the supplies and the people to help residents with home repairs and renovations. In 2023 alone, we rehabbed 65 homes, positively impacting over 100 individuals.

Education:
We don’t want families having to choose between putting food on the table or school supplies in their kids’ backpacks. Our education programs provide school kits (5,400 distributed in 2023), and we also support after-school programs so students have access to critical technology and tutors that enhance learning.

AHA also provides teacher grants, vocational training, and wellness initiatives that provide vision, dental, and medical care.
