Hero of the Month – This Hero was there to help victims of the Hurricane.

October 31, 2024

Americans Helping Americans® is proud to announce Bridgette Crawford Woods as our Hero of the Month for October. Bridgette is a dedicated volunteer with our partner organization, Appalachian Ministries of the Smokies (AMOS), in Jefferson City, Tennessee. She also works alongside her husband to serve the homeless through their ministry, Ninety-Nine for One.

Immediate Action After Hurricane Helene

When Bridgette heard about the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene, she immediately thought of her friends and wanted to help. Karrie Foust, AMOS volunteer coordinator, reported:

“When she heard about the flooding from Hurricane Helene, she immediately thought about her friends and wanted to help. She took food supplies and water from AMOS right away.”

Transporting Essential Supplies

Bridgette’s commitment didn’t stop there. After AMOS received sleeping bags from Americans Helping Americans®, she willingly transported them to Newport, which is about 25 miles away. She kept AMOS updated on the needs in Newport, where NPR reported on October 2:

“On a Tennessee street hit hard by Helene flooding, strangers show up to help.”

The report described the scene:

  • Front yards turned into mud pits.
  • Piles of ruined furniture, ripped-out flooring, and drywall scattered throughout the area.

As people awaited further assistance, the kindness of strangers provided a small solace amid the devastation. Those not directly affected by Helene connected on Facebook, creating an informal network to help their neighbors. This effort resulted in a steady stream of volunteers offering their time and labor.

Providing Hot Meals for Families

In addition to her work with AMOS, Bridgette, along with fellow volunteers Ann Smith and Vickie Cagle, arranged to provide hot meals for families in need. Their efforts brought comfort and nourishment to those affected by the disaster.

Ongoing Support for the Homeless

When she is not volunteering for AMOS, Bridgette and her husband, Derek, take hot meals and essential items to the homeless across several counties. They make monthly visits to various locations, distributing food, clothing, tents, hygiene items, and other necessities, as reported by Karrie in her nomination of Bridgette.

“Bridgette is a light in the community,” says Karrie, who describes her as “always positive, upbeat, and has a kind word for everyone.”

Conclusion

Bridgette Crawford Woods exemplifies the spirit of community service and compassion. Her unwavering dedication to helping those affected by Hurricane Helene and the homeless in her area makes her a true hero. Join us in celebrating Bridgette’s remarkable contributions and the positive change she brings to her community.
