For many, Appalachia is a region of breathtaking beauty and rich cultural heritage. But for countless families, it is also a place marked by generational poverty, limited access to healthcare, and ongoing challenges tied to geography and opportunity. If you’ve been wondering how to help Appalachia and make a lasting difference, you’ve come to the right place.
You can help Appalachian communities by:
- Ensuring families have safe and stable housing
- Fighting hunger and food insecurity
- Supporting students with educational resources
- Providing for basic and urgent needs
- Donating to trusted, on-the-ground organizations
Each of these actions plays a critical role in strengthening families and creating brighter futures across the region. In this guide, we’ll explore five powerful ways to support Appalachia and highlight how, at Americans Helping Americans®, we are turning compassion into measurable impact.
Understanding the Challenges in Appalachia Today
To truly help Appalachia, it’s important to understand the daily challenges families face. The region is home to strong, resilient communities, yet many continue to struggle against systemic barriers that limit opportunity and access to essential resources.
According to recent data, 14.3% of Appalachian residents live in poverty, a rate significantly higher than the national average. This means that hundreds of thousands of families are still facing food insecurity, unsafe or aging housing, and limited access to healthcare and jobs. For many, even a small setback, like a medical emergency or storm damage, can push a household into crisis.
Our team has spent decades addressing these issues and exploring sustainable solutions. As we outline in our in-depth look at poverty in Appalachia, overcoming these challenges requires both immediate relief and long-term investment in education, housing, and local infrastructure.
This is why continued community support matters. By learning where the needs are greatest and responding with compassion, we can ensure that no Appalachian family is left behind.
5 Real Ways You Can Help Appalachian Communities
1. Fight Hunger and Food Insecurity

Hunger continues to be one of the most pressing challenges in Appalachia. Many families live far from grocery stores and face limited access to affordable, nutritious food. For children and seniors especially, one unexpected setback (a medical bill, job loss, or winter storm) can quickly lead to food insecurity.
We’re committed to meeting these needs through three key food initiatives:
- Food boxes that provide families with essential groceries and shelf-stable meals
- A summer food program for kids that ensures children have nutritious meals when school is out
- Holiday meal programs that bring comfort and togetherness to families during the hardest months of the year
A donation of just $24 provides a food box that can feed a family of four for an entire week. In 2025 alone, supporters made it possible to distribute 18,648 food boxes across Appalachia; direct proof that donations directly fund programs that change lives.
One powerful example comes from McDowell County, Tennessee, where our partner Big Creek People in Action received an $8,000 grant to provide 360 families (more than 700 individuals) with a turkey or ham and all the traditional trimmings for a holiday meal. Part of that same grant funded a community Christmas dinner, where 20 turkeys were prepared for turkey casserole, mashed potatoes, and green beans served to approximately 600 people.
“Hunger will be alleviated for a while through providing a full holiday meal at the Christmas party and a food box and turkey to provide other meals to people who are at risk of hunger,” says Dyanne Spriggs, Executive Director of Big Creek People in Action.
Stories like this show how communities come together when given the right support. Through partnerships like these, we continue to help Appalachia by ensuring families have food on the table and hope in their hearts.
2. Help Appalachian Students Succeed

Education is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty, yet many young people in Appalachia face overwhelming obstacles to success. Limited school funding, a lack of essential supplies, and unreliable internet access create barriers that make learning far more difficult for students already working to overcome economic hardship.
Our education and vocational training initiatives are designed to remove those barriers and create opportunity. Through community partnerships and donor support, we provide school supply kits, after-school enrichment programs, and workforce training for high school students preparing for the future.
In 2025 alone, we supplied 3,425 students with custom school supplies and supported 209 vocational students through tutor support programs.
These efforts are part of our mission to help Appalachian students succeed; not just in the classroom, but in life.
One of the most inspiring stories comes from our Want2Work initiative, which helps young adults pursue career education in critical fields. SJ, a young mother from Appalachia, dreamed of becoming a nurse but nearly had to abandon her program when an unexpected financial crisis made tuition impossible to afford. A Want2Work grant covered her remaining costs, allowing her to stay in school and move closer to her goal.
“I’m doing this to give my son a better life, but I am also doing this for me. I have found a passion I absolutely love.” — SJ, Want2Work Grant Recipient
Stories like SJ’s capture why this work matters. Every supply kit, every scholarship, and every mentorship program helps Appalachia build a stronger, more self-sufficient future where every student has the tools to thrive.
3. Provide for Basic Needs

Understanding how to help Appalachia means recognizing that poverty goes beyond hunger. For many families, rising costs have made even the most basic necessities (warm clothing, shoes, or utilities) increasingly out of reach. Harsh winters, unstable housing, and limited job opportunities leave thousands struggling to meet daily needs that many take for granted.
Through our community assistance programs, we provide year-round support to ensure families can stay warm, safe, and healthy. In 2025, we distributed 5,012 winter coats and 5,700 blankets to help families through the coldest months. We also provided utility assistance to prevent shutoffs and delivered dental care kits to promote better health for children and seniors alike.
One of the most powerful parts of this effort is our Barefeet shoe program. As our partner Dyanne Spriggs shared, “Often, the most visible sign of poverty is the condition of the child’s shoes.”
That truth was heartbreakingly clear when a mother and her four young children arrived at a partner pantry after losing everything in a trailer fire. It was 30 degrees outside, and the family had no shoes or warm clothing. Through the compassion of donors and community partners, they received new shoes, socks, and coats; small items that restored comfort, safety, and dignity in a moment of crisis.
Stories like these remind us why this work matters. Meeting basic needs is not just about surviving; it’s about helping families rebuild. It’s one of the most immediate and meaningful ways to show how our programs help in Appalachia.
4. Ensure Safe and Stable Housing

Learning how to help Appalachia also means understanding the housing challenges many families face. Across the region, low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners often live in unsafe conditions that threaten their health and safety. Leaking roofs, collapsing floors, and homes without wheelchair access make everyday life dangerous and unstable for people who simply want to remain in the places they call home.
Through our home repair grants, we provide both materials and skilled labor to restore these homes. In 2025, we rehabilitated 141 houses, improving living conditions for 154 people. These repairs don’t just fix structures; they restore dignity, security, and peace of mind.
One story that captures the impact of this work is Thelma’s. She is raising her two young grandchildren in a small home where the bathroom floor was so weak that the children were afraid to use it. Our local partner assessed the situation, repaired the flooring, and ensured the family’s kitchen and bathroom were safe again.
“Her family can now use the kitchen and bathroom without the fear of falling through.”
These are the kinds of transformations that happen every day through the power of community support. They are just a few of the lives you can touch. To see how your support makes a difference every day, explore more real stories on our blog.
